What is the Certified Professional in Learning and Performance (CPLP)™?

The ASTD Certification Institute built the Certified Professional in Learning and Performance (CPLP)™ credential to provide a way for workplace learning and performance professionals to prove their worth to employers and their peers and to be confident about their knowledge of the field. The ASTD (American Society for Training & Development) is the world’s largest association dedicated to workplace learning and performance professionals. Members work in thousands of organizations of all sizes, in government, as independent consultants, and suppliers. By earning your CPLP designation, you communicate to your employers that you are not only dedicated to continuing your education but also validate your expertise in learning and performance.

CPLP designation showcases the workplace learning professional’s knowledge and performance in the nine areas of expertise as defined by the ASTD Competency Model. Participants in the program will not only be confident and prepared for the CPLP Certification exam, but they will also network with other workplace learning and performance professionals, gain professional development through interactive discussions and exercises and provide a quality learning and performance system to your organization.

Those eligible for the CPLP certification are professionals in the learning and performance field and have a minimum of three years of related work experience, although five years of related work experience is preferred.

ASTD Competency ModelWhat is the ASTD Competency Model?

After extensive research, ASTD developed its latest competency model, which defines the clusters of skills, knowledge, abilities, and behaviors required for success across all workplace learning and performance jobs.
The ASTD Competency Model, which is shaped like a pyramid, has three tiers: Foundational Competencies, Areas of Expertise (AOEs), and WLP Roles. The CPLP body of knowledge is based primarily on the nine AOEs that are located in the middle tier of the model.
The AOEs are the specific technical and professional knowledge and skills required for success in the field.

What are the Foundational Competencies and WLP Roles?

The ASTD Competency Model presented the idea of foundational competencies. These foundational competencies are categorized as follows:

• Interpersonal: how well you work with, manage, and influence people, policy, and change.
• Business and management: how well you analyze situations, make decisions, and implement solutions.
• Personal: how well you adapt to change and make personal decisions to enhance your career.
It is essential that WLP professionals fortify this foundation by keeping in touch with resources that build and refresh these skill sets.
At the top of the competency model are four roles, or lenses through which WLP practitioners may view the model:
• learning strategist
• business partner
• project manager
• professional specialist
A WLP professional may play one or more roles in his or her job.

What are the Areas of Expertise?

As part of the 2004 initiative to build a competency model for learning and performance professionals, ASTD identified nine areas of expertise, deamed critical for workplace learning and performance (WLP) professionals:
• career planning and talent management
• coaching
• delivering training
• designing learning
• facilitating organizational change
• improving human performance
• managing the learning function
• managing organizational knowledge
• measuring and evaluating

Each AOE represents a distinct area of practice with unique outputs and knowledge areas and each assumes the use of certain  methods and operating processes. You can think of AOEs as the knowledge and skills an individual must have above and beyond the foundational competencies. To function effectively in a given AOE, a person must display a blend of the appropriate foundational competencies and unique technical or professional skills and knowledge.

AOE of the Month

Designing Learning

Designing Learning focuses the WLP professional towards an understanding of the foundational theories and concepts of adult learning. In addition, this AOE addresses how the various methods should be considered when designing learning solutions, including needs assessment, acquisition of core content to be taught, and the need to be adept at researching topics to create effective instruction. Designing, creating, and developing effective learning and training that meets the needs of participants are the basic elements of this AOE. How technology is also important, and must be maximized to create effective training. Topics included in this AOE include:

• Four theories of Learning and Instruction
• Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
• Knowles’s Adult Learning Theory
• Bloom’s Taxonomy
• Theories of Learning and Memory
• Neurolinguistic Programming
• ADDIE Model
• Gagne’s Nine Events of Instruction

Study Group Specifics

The Study Group meets each Tuesday for 16 weeks from 11:30 to 1:30. It is completely virtual. We will utilize AdobeConnect and VoiP to share information with the group. A calendar of topics will be published on the ASTD Suncoast site. We will also have guest speakers and co-facilitators from time to time to assist us with the knowledge base needed for the exam. In addition, there are separate sessions scheduled for Work Product discussions. Each participant is expected to “present” certain topics to the group each week. No more than 10 minutes for each topic is required. This helps the group prepare for the session and helps each individual more effectively learn the materials. Materials for the session will be emailed to each participant the week before the appropriate session to familiarize you with the topics being covered. Pre- and Post-tests are sent with the materials to help you become comfortable with the testing format.

What Does the Typical Study Group Session Look Like?

  • 11:30-11:35 -- Review of Pretest
  • 11:35 – 12:00 – Guest Speaker
  • 12:00 – 1:15 – Teach back Sessions and review of other topics
  • 1:15-1:30 -- Next session assignments
