Program Description: This session will focus on how companies are addressing the impact of the economic crisis and will provide creative solutions and tools to address the impact. We will discuss recent research on this topic as well as solicit opinions from a 3-Executive panel. In a breakout session format, attendees will then have the opportunity to discuss the lessons learned from the research and the opinions of the panel to develop tactics that can be implemented at their organizations.
Our panel will share:
- The impact of the financial crisis on their company; How extreme has the impact been & How is work being done differently in your organization as a result
- Successes & challenges and what their company has learned from these experiences
- Their predictions for short and long term economic conditions and their plan to address these conditions
- The specific impact on Employee Engagement/performance and the impact on the bench strength of their leadership pipeline
- Two – three suggestions and tools for leading in challenging times

Speaker Information:
Jon Canger: Jon’s 30 year career includes senior leadership roles in Human Resources, Talent Acquisition, Leadership Development and Organization Development for a number of well-known organizations, including Verizon, Motorola, the Coca-Cola Company and Monster Worldwide.
Jon was also the top Human Resources officer for the first publicly-traded executive search firm, has run his own business and served on the board of directors for two start ups before joining Marriott in 2007.
In his current role, Jon is responsible for all aspects of Human Resources across all of Marriott’s brands, including Marriott, Renaissance, JW Marriott, Ritz-Carlton, Courtyard, Fairfield Inn and Residence Inn Hotels. Jon’s region includes 22 countries, from the Southeastern United States, across the Caribbean, Central and South America.
He did his undergraduate work at Rutgers University and holds Masters and Ph.D. degrees in Industrial and Organizational Psychology from the University of South Florida. Jon has taught graduate level courses in the MBA program at the John Sykes School of Business at the University of Tampa and the University of South Florida’s Ph.D. program. He has been a speaker at a number of professional conferences and events in the US and around the world.
Ed Fandel: Ed Fandel has approximately 20 years of accounting and insurance industry experience. He received his Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Stonehill College, North Easton, MA, in 1989. He began his career in 1989 with KPMG in Boston, where his primary responsibility was auditing large property and casualty insurance carriers. In 1995, Ed joined Liberty Mutual as an Assistant Controller of Risk Services. At Liberty Mutual, he held a number of key positions within their Finance Team, working with a variety of different businesses within the organization. In April 2005, he joined Travelers of Florida as Chief Financial Officer and Vice President with responsibilities for Finance Operations and Product Management and in December 2007, he was appointed President and CEO of the Company.
In March of 2009 Ed joined AAA Auto Club South as Vice President of Insurance Direct Marketing and was promoted to Sr. Vice President of Insurance and Branch Operations in October of 2009.
Nanci Cole Odom: Within two years of joining Handy City, a Division of W.R. Grace located in Atlanta, Nanci became Director of HR for this 54 store chain with 2,500 employees, located in eight states. She then became Corporate Director of HR for Guest Quarters Hotels, based in Washington D.C. Guest Quarters, the first all-suite hotel company on the East coast, doubled in size during Nanci’s six year tenure.
Nanci joined WHSmith, the 200 year-old British retailer. She was promoted to VP HR a year later. During her 12 years with WHSmith, Nanci served as VP HR for WHSmith USA Travel (the 500 airport and hotel stores) and concurrently served as VP HR for the holding company, WHSmith Group USA. In her Group USA role she oversaw the HR functions for both Waterstone’s Booksellers, based in Boston and The Wall Music based in Philadelphia.
In 2000 Nanci joined Lodgian Hotels as VP HR. Lodgian, the largest franchisee of Holiday Inn brands, had 110 hotels located in 24 states with 10,000 employees. In early 2002 she was recruited to Barton Protective Services, a 25 year old, privately held, Atlanta based company as SVP HR. Barton operated in 27 states and has 13,000 employees. Barton also has had the privilege of being named as one of Fortune Magazine’s “100 Best Companies to Work for in America.”
Nanci joined AAA Auto Club South as VP HR in September 2005. She is active in several professional organizations including Human Resource Leadership Forum (HRLF), Human Resources Planning Society (HRPS), and Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), and has served as a GA 100 mentor.
